Grammar JLPT Level N5 - Lesson 2
Structure of よ:
Details about よ:
The particle よ is what's known as a sentence ending particle. Its primary function is to present information that the speaker believes is new to the listener, often adding a sense of assertion or emphasis. As is typical for particles of this type, it is placed directly at the end of a complete sentence.
- この映画は面白いよ。This movie is interesting!
- 図書館はあそこだよ。The library is over there!
While よ typically introduces new facts, it is frequently combined with the particle ね. When used together as よね, it seeks agreement from the listener, creating a nuance similar to asking '..., right?'. The speaker is essentially stating a belief and expecting the listener to share that same opinion.
- 今日は休みだよね。Today is a holiday, right?
- 日本語は難しいよね。Japanese is difficult, isn't it?
Caution
You may have observed that a noun is followed by だ, whereas an い-Adjective is not. This isn't a special rule for よ; it reflects the standard conjugation patterns for い-Adjectives and な-Adjectives that you've already learned. For a more polite tone, ですよ can be used after any of these word types (nouns or adjectives).
