Structure of 直(なお)す:
Verb[ます]+ なおす
Details about 直(なお)す:
直す is a verb that means 'to fix', or 'to redo'. It is used when saying that something needs to be done a second time (usually due to the result/quality being insufficient the first time). To use 直す, it will need to be attached to the ます stem form of any verb.
- 髪がちゃんと染まってなかったので染め直します。Because my hair isn't properly dyed, I will redo it.
- フェンスを塗りなおす。To repaint the fence.
- お客様に挨拶をし直す。To re-greet the customer.
- プロポーズはやり直す事が出来ないから、緊張している。Because you can't redo proposals, I am nervous.
直(なお)す
Usage Notes for 直(なお)す:
直す (to fix) should not be confused with 治す (to heal/mend). The kanji 直 literally means 'straight', or 'direct', and implies that one should 'straighten out' something.
